A Packet of Mexican Jumping Beans

Aren’t for planting in the spring
or anytime for that matter.

They’re more like Rock-n-Roll
than something you’d find in

a burrito or a bowl of hot soup.

We’re not talking Jack’s beanstalk.
We’re talking something hijacked.

A bean that jumps when there’s
heat because of the parasite inside.

Barter

Things are good.
There’s nothing
to break.

Coming back from
a beaten path,
traded a machete
for three bottles
of Argentinean
pinot noir.

Things are bad.
Things won’t
bend or break.

Sensing that Perfect, Isolated Wave

For Chris Kelly

Surfing Playa de Muertos,
a broken strap two-hundred
yards out.

Maybe it was safer
in the Suzuki on the way
to the beach or crusin’
the mountain roads of

Costa Rica on an
Enduro dirt bike.

Maybe it was safer
in the rental car for
three-plus hours
traveling to

the Costa Rica-
Nicaragua border.

Perhaps it would have been
safer staying in Puerto Rico.

Surely, Tampa, Florida’s iworld.
